Abstract: |
In October 1993, the City of Hereford Archaeology Unit were informed of proposals to replace the gas main along the length of Cantilupe Street. (Along the relatively short length from St Owen's Street through to its junction with Mill Street, the trench would cross the line of the Saxon defences twice, the postulated site of the Saxon east gate, and the line of the medieval city wall and ditch.) Arrangements were made to lay the new pipes as near as possible to the existing route and, despite regular visits by archaeologists who had every hope of discovering further evidence about the earliest defences of Hereford, no levels of importance were encountered. ("Once again the mitigation strategy had been successful.")[AIP] |
