Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a range of apartment buildings along the Priory Street frontage with 'mews' style houses set behind together with surface parking and amenity gardens. The site was shown to have a good archaeological potential for a number of past periods. Particularly, archaeological remains of Iron Age, late Saxon, late medieval and post-medieval date could have potentially been present. More specifically, the site was identified as the probable location of an 'Alien Priory' suppressed in 1414, and was the location of a former malting complex of apparent early 19th century date. Past impacts on the potential archaeological resource were likely to have been limited. Severe localised impacts, could, however, be anticipated as a result of the cutting of footings and service runs. Prior to any demolition and clearance of the site, the existing former malting complex should be archaeologically recorded. [Au(adp)] |
