Abstract:
The excavation of eight evaluation trenches across the site revealed extensive evidence of medieval activity, predominantly in the form of domestic rubbish pits, although at least two post holes and two possible pit boundaries were identified. Activity from this period appeared to be focused around the 12th to 13th centuries, although at least one late Anglo-Saxon pit (in addition to early Anglo-Saxon residual pottery) and a small number of Saxo-Norman features were also present. Some 18th and 19th century activity was also located and was likely to relate to garden and drainage features within the former ground of Lewes House. One Late Iron Age ditch was also located, in addition to two large contemporary pits. Such evidence was incredibly rare within Lewes, the only other examples being a pit and spatially associated post holes within an earlier evaluation only c.50m to the south. [Au(abr)]
