Abstract: |
Despite taxing ground conditions, a relatively consistent data set was collected. Whilst it appeared that responses from both the purported Roman metalling and the wall itself had been recorded, little else of archaeological interest was identified. High values from the resistance survey and strong responses in the GPR data toward the east of the survey area were possibly an effect of features associated with an extant concrete tank forming the limit of the survey in that direction. The most promising anomaly identified was a linear feature comprising a series of high amplitude GPR reflections running roughly perpendicular to the city wall. This was tentatively interpreted as potentially being of archaeological importance. The response from the wall petered out toward the southern limits of the survey. It was unclear if this related to the degree of survival or merely inferior ground conditions in this area. [Au] |
