Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for opencast coal extraction identified that several archaeological sites had been recorded within the proposal area, including a cropmark enclosure of possible Romano-British date, a number of bell pits which had probably been used for ironstone extraction, and an area of ridge and furrow. A Roman road also ran through the site. An analysis of aerial photographs resulted in the discovery of several further features in the proposal area. These included linear features which probably represented field boundaries, possible water management features, a rectilinear enclosure complex and possible sub-circular enclosures. Further archaeological investigation of the site was recommended. [AIP] |
