Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development was undertaken. Banks and ditches which may have represented old field boundaries, or may have related to more recent activity, lay within the site. In the surrounding area, Neolithic flints and a Bronze Age hammerhead had been found, whilst a Neolithic long barrow, Bronze Age burials, an Iron Age settlement and Roman buildings had been recorded. Medieval and post-medieval pottery kilns were relatively frequent along the Surrey-Hampshire border. It was concluded that archaeological features of some kind were likely to exist at the site. Recording of the banks and ditches prior to their investigation by excavation was recommended, as were an extensive survey, a preliminary evaluation and a watching brief during groundworks. [AIP] |
