Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out at Lackford Quarry as a condition to the consent of the planning application to extract gravel from a narrow strip of land alongside the southern edge of Culford Stream. Extensive peat layers were identified which illustrated that the landscape was wet and marshy. Within the environment a ridge of sand was identified which would have stood as a raised island and as such a suitable place for occupation. The fills of the channel which defined the east edge of the island were indicative of a water source, the water flow in which seemed to have been eventually slowed by a continuous silting and was finally choked by vegetation. Finds dated the occupation of the island to the Bronze Age and therefore it could well have been contemporary with, and a continuation of, a burnt flint mound which had been previously identified. The features as a group, their density and frequency of finds suggested that the occupation of the site was probably a well established settlement rather than transitory. [Au] |
