Abstract: |
The excavation revealed important evidence for Saxon settlement possibly spanning the 5th-11th centuries. Whether settlement was continuous throughout this period was not clear. Three sunken-featured buildings containing significant quantities of Early/Middle Saxon pottery were found, although few other features could be assigned to this early phase. In the western half of the site were five timber halls of post hole, beam slot and post-in-trench construction which were assigned a later Saxon date. Comparatively little pottery was recovered from the timber halls, and it was possible that the two post hole buildings were of Early/Middle Saxon date, perhaps contemporary with the sunken-featured buildings. Other post hole clusters may have represented the incomplete plans of structures, and a relatively substantial ditch of Late Saxon date was shown to be earlier than one of the timber halls. Medieval features comprised a series of shallow ditches of 12th-13th century date which appeared to represent field and/or enclosure boundaries, perhaps associated with properties which lay along the London Road frontage some 15-20m to the east of the site. This supported the view that the main focus of medieval occupation lay around the market place to the north and that the excavated area lay within a par of the town which probably reverted to fields, enclosures or gardens from the 12th century onwards. A small number of post-medieval (17th-19th century) pits in the east part of the site probably reflected post-medieval development along London Road. [Au(abr)] |
