Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, following a desk-top study which had identified the possibility that pottery kilns of Saxo-Norman date could be present. Two kilns had previously been recorded close to the site. Topsoil deposits at the west end of the site were found to have sealed a loose spread of limestone fragments and pebbles, possibly a surface, post-dating the Saxo-Norman period. A north-south ditch with an articulated horse skeleton in its primary fill and 10th-11th century pottery was also revealed. Plough furrows to the east of this ditch were found cutting medieval ditches aligned north-south, one of which cut a late Saxon ditch. A total of 1080 sherds of pottery were recovered during the evaluation, many of which represented waster material. Although no kilns were revealed, some of the pottery wasters were of previously unrecorded forms, indicating that a further kiln or kilns could have lain in the vicinity of the site. The lack of material dating from the 12th-17th centuries suggested that this part of Torksey may have once been an industrial area which had subsequently been abandoned. [Au(adp)]
