Abstract:
The evaluation comprising a programme of trial trenching was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of a proposed supermarket development. Pottery of Middle Saxon date had been found a short distance from the site. Domesday indicated the settlement was in existence in the Late Saxon period and a medieval coin had been found nearby. The evaluation recorded a wall, several ditches and a gully dating to the medieval period, probably suggesting the segregation of the land into property units during that period. Waterlogged organic remains were preserved in several of these ditches. Previously documented pits were recorded centrally within the development area. The presence of numerous glass bottles suggested they had been used as refuse pits during the early to mid 20th century. The archaeological remains were buried by up to 0.52m depth of topsoil. A metal detector survey of this soil retrieved a quantity of modern metalwork. [Au(abr)]
