Abstract: |
A watching brief was held on the erection of a new apartment block and to structural alterations to the standing building. Apart from one sherd of residual Roman pottery, the earliest evidence for human activity found on the site was late-medieval in date. The area of the new block was in the backyard area of the street frontage property. The features included a timber lined well and a timber-lined gulley. The latter probably helped drain the site into a stream that was said to have existed to the south. A single wooden post was found. It may have been part of a structure, but no other posts were found in the watching brief. The ground level was built up by deliberate dumping of brick rubble. The timber framed building was found to date from the late-medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
