Abstract: |
Assessment of the archaeological constaints and implications of the construction of an extension to the district council offices identified that the area surrounding the proposal area was characterised by a high density of Roman features, including occupation deposits and habitation structures at Paternoster House and the Health Clinic to the north, the defensive wall of Corinium to the south, and a street dividing two Insulae to the west. At the end of the Roman period the area fell into disuse and remains as fields until 1836 when a workhouse was constructed. This was later converted to a hospital prior to becoming district council offices in 1975. It was thought possible that the construction of the workhouse had damaged or destroyed a large part of any archaeological deposits once on the present site although it was felt that further information would be required to make a fuller assessment of the implications of development.
