Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of three trial trenches, demonstrated three phases of activity. Phase 1 was represented by a ditch and post holes in trench 2, dating to the late Anglo-Saxon or early medieval periods. Phase 2 included a medieval north-east to south-west aligned boundary ditch and a small pit or post hole. Trench 1 nearest the street frontage contained later features which included an 18th or 19th century mortar floor surface and pit. The pit was sealed below later floor surfaces and a 19th century brick structure, likely to be a shop demolished in the 20th century. A medieval lead shield-shaped weight depicting a 'green man' was recovered from the backfill of a wall construction trenches. [Au(abr)] |
