Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the alteration of a former public house, at a site which lay within a conservation area and a zone of archaeological importance within the historic core of Wednesfield. No previous below-ground archaeological investigations had taken place in the town. Outside the footprint of the building, a probable late 18th century occupation deposit and an early 19th century pit were recorded. The watching brief served to demonstrate that, although demolition and cellaring had probably erased evidence of earlier occupation along the High Street frontage of Wednesfield, survival of deposits could be anticipated within backplot areas.
