Abstract: |
A test pit on the west side of the barn was enlarged, in order to elucidate the nature of a cut feature containing the remains of timber(s) at its base, in case the feature turned out to be a grave. The feature appeared to be associated with the barn building. Some form of drainage feature was the most likely function of the feature. The drain cut was capped with timber planks and water-borne silts being deposited within the drain cut probably formed the deposit located beneath the timbers. The pottery suggested that the drain was constructed in the 13th/14th century. The longevity of the drain was unknown, and it could have collapsed at any time thereafter. A probable recut observed in the fill of the drain in the north-east of the trench was of unknown purpose, but may have represented a later attempt to clean out the drain for re-use. [Au(adp)] |
