Abstract:
<summary>An evaluation excavation carried out in advance of rebuilding the public conveniences in East Street ({italon}Hereford Archaeology Series, Report No 142{italoff}) indicated the need to excavate more fully those deposits which would be destroyed by the development (ie down to 0.90m below ground level). The trench size of this subsequent excavation was limited to 3.4m x 2.2m due to the presence of a sewer pipe. The excavated area lies within the northern arm of the Saxon defences (consisting of a rampart and ditch, established mid 9th century, later rebuilt and strengthened, and abandoned late 12th century). The earliest level excavated revealed a gravel spread with little dating evidence, which may have been the remains of a yard surface. In the early 17th century, the area was used for rubbish and cess disposal, as is evidenced by a series of pits. A malthouse was then built on the site, probably in the 18th century, the cellar of which was partially exposed during the evaluation. After demolition of the malthouse, a gravel yard surface was laid; at this time the site is thought to have become a stable for the City Arms Hotel. The unexcavated layers below 0.90m are of considerable importance, and it was recommended that they should be sealed and preserved. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM20133
