Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during redevelopment and restoration works at Southport Pier (constructed in 1860). The pier had clearly undergone changes, mainly structural alteration improvements. As most of the main alterations were carried out shortly after the pier was opened, great care was taken to ensure that its overall appearance remained unchanged. Noticeable alterations included the widening of the northern side in 1864 and later in 1899 as well as areas which had been rebuilt using different materials and designs. The bridge, carrying the pier over Marine Drive, was constructed during the 1970's and separated the two halves of the pier. None of the original ironwork was retained in the structure, which appeared to have been of a prefabricated nature. The pierhead was constructed out of concrete, in 1939, on large concrete piles.
