Abstract: |
Fieldwalking was undertaken to evaluate the archaeological potential of land proposed for development at Wellfield Park. A late Neolithic flint assemblage, containing a high percentage of tools towards the centre and eastern boundary of the study area, was recovered along with significant quantities of burnt flint. The diversity of tool types was suggested as indicating a domestic site rather than a temporary hunting camp. The presence of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery within the flint scatter suggested the several phases of prehistoric activity had taken place on the site. A small quantity of medieval pot-sherds were also recovered, probably incorporated into the ploughsoil through manuring. [AIP] |
