Abstract: |
Little information was available for early periods in the vicinity but there was good documentary, and recent archaeological evidence to suggest that Chesterton was a thriving settlement from at least the late 11th century onwards. Projection of the early road line from Ardbury Camp (the old King's Hedges Road/Union Lane) pointed to a possible Roman crossing point of the river within the riverside area of the site. Given that location, any organic remians would be well preserved. Medieval remains may have survived along Church Street and prehistoric finds could also be made on the site. The central area of the site appeared to have been entirely destroyed during the construction of the standing structures, however there was a good chance of the survival at either end. [Au] |
