Abstract: |
An Archaeological Watching Brief was undertaken during works at the Aberford sewage treatment plant. The southern side of a ditch associated with this section of Becca Banks was recorded in plan, and two small sections were hand-excavated in order to record part of the ditch profile. Additionally, part of a probable ditch and associated soil profiles were recorded on a lower river terrace further to the south. No secure dating evidence was recovered from either feature. The watching brief confirmed the presence and location of the ditch associated within the section of Becca Banks, and showed it to survive undamaged to a considerable depth despite disurbance relating to construction of the existing sewage treatment plant. In addition, it was shown that any archaeological features on the lower terrace within the site, nearer to Cock Beck, had only been minimally disturbed during earlier construction works, being sealed beneath deposits of modern dumping.
