Abstract: |
An excavation and watching brief were carried out in advance of groundworks for a housing development. A previous evaluation at the site had located medieval deposits and Saxon pottery, although further excavation had yielded disappointing results. The 1995 excavation was necessitated by alterations to the layout of the development. A possible prehistoric ditch, containing struck flints and animal bones, was recorded, and four gullies were found. One contained medieval pottery, and the others may have been post-medieval property boundaries. Eighteen post holes were located, one of which contained a sherd of possible Saxon pottery. A pit containing a bone comb, Saxon and medieval pottery was found. A Victorian pit was also present; this cut into a probable Saxon pit which contained the disarticulated bones of at least three humans. Signs of trauma on the bones and the apparent method of deposition suggested that these were the remains of executed criminals. [AIP] |
