Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on the groundworks to extend the children's play area within the area of the scheduled monument of Clare Castle. A horizon of loose but densely packed unworked flints were identified. Amongst the flints were occasional fragments of tile and pieces of fine mortar rubble. Animal bone and pottery were collected from within the spread. Beyond, to the east edge of the excavation, a low linear ridge could be seen in the relief of the ground, and the width and alignment of this coincided with the spread of flints suggesting that the two were associated. The flints however did not extend to the eastern edge of the excavation area and did not appear in the section of the ridge. The report concluded that the flints appeared to represent a spread of building material or rubble and it seemed likely that this was a re-deposited dump. The ridge beyond the excavation was probably associated with these and the rise in the ground was probably caused by a continuation of the buried dump deposit. There was no post-medieval material among the datable finds to suggest that this was a recent deposit, and it was possible that it was associated with the castle. [Au(adp)]
