Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that scatters of prehistoric burnt flint had been recorded c. 1km to the north-east, and that a Roman road had lain to the east. No Saxon or early medieval settlements or material had been recorded in the surrounding area, although an enclosure in the vicinity had been referred to in a will of 1045. During the later medieval period, the site had lain within Ongar Great Park, which had been enclosed by a boundary bank with two ditches. The north-western park boundary was thought to have lain just to the north of the study site. The area was thought to have been cleared of woodland for use as agricultural land by the post-medieval period. It was concluded that the site had a modest potential for evidence of prehistoric activity, and a moderate potential for remains relating to the boundary of Ongar Great Park. Trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
