Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the demolition of the existing buildings, and the construction of 32 residential apartments and associated amenities. Historically, the site lay beyond the area of Reading that was developed during the Saxon and medieval periods. However, the number of SMR entries in the vicinity of the proposal site hinted to the rich archaeological resource of Reading, many of which related to the development of the waterfront in the town. The close proximity of the proposal site to the river was therefore a relevant point of discussion. The Kennet valley in general was rich in prehistoric finds and sites, and the riverside location certainly exercised a positive attraction for early settlement. While the site lay outside of the bounds of medieval Reading, an entry on the SMR indicated that there may have been early post-medieval wharves in the area. The only trace of these were fittings within the current brick canal wall, indicating that any remnants of the structures were unlikely to have been within the proposal site. The survival of any archaeological deposits on the site was conditional on the extent of later truncations. It was evident that the site had had a relatively short history of use. The development of the proposal site during the 19th century indicated that the whole of the site had been covered by buildings. However, the industrial nature of these buildings suggested that basements were unlikely. Any archaeologically relevant layers would therefore have remained intact beneath and around the foundations of the current warehouses. It was possible that some reclamation of the river edge had taken place with infilling of the space behind the current river wall and if so, this would have acted to preserve deeper deposits of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental interest. The report determined that the proposal site had the potential to contain subsurface archaeological deposits. It was therefore determined that an archaeological evaluation would be required to assess more fully the presence/absence and nature of archaeological remains, most easily achieved following demolition of the current structures.
