Abstract: |
There was evidence from both the archaeological and historical record that the Croydon area had a wealth of archaeological material and features that showed continuous human activity from the prehistoric time to present. For most of its history, the proposed development site had been open or agricultural land and it was only in the late 19th or early 20th century that development took place with the building of four houses and gardens, being a garage only since 1955 or 1958. Based on the known evidence, there was a low probability for any prehistoric, Saxon, medieval or post-medieval (16th to 18th century) archaeological features on the proposed site, though stray finds may turn up. There was, however, a low to medium probability for any Roman archaeological features on the proposed site, though other evaluation along the road had produced negative results. [Au(abr)] |
