Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during excavations for a new stairway on the north face of the White Tower, at the Tower of London. In situ medieval soil layers and chalk structures which appeared to represent the remains of walls were recorded, and previously obscured courses of the White Tower's north wall were revealed. A post-medieval drain was also observed. Medieval pottery, charcoal and bone and post-medieval artefacts, including 17th-19th century clay pipe and ceramic building materials, were recovered. [AIP] |
