Abstract:
Archaeological observations were made at 21 South Street, Chichester. The lowest levels seen were medieval, pre-dating 1400. All pottery and other materials recovered from the levels above this by the builder were of 18th-19th century date, with the exception of a fragment of medieval decorated floor tile. A boundary wall which ran diagonally across the site was observed to have been modern along most of its length, although its eastern quarter dated from c. 1825. Towards the centre of the wall, and running beneath it, was an 18th century well. The northern site boundary was an entirely 19th century (c. 1825) wall. A brick relieving arch was seen in the lower part of its eastern end; this had clearly been made to go over another, probably contemporary well. The foundation to the main north-south front wall of the east range of the Vicars' Close was also investigated. It lay a foot or so below the chamfered pinth of the rubble masonry of the wall itself, and was constructed of chalk block. With the uncovering of this, it was possible to record the ground level in this part of the Close when the range had been built in the early 15th century. [Au(abr)]
