Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development site revealed that a spread of Palaeolithic artefacts had been found along the route of an adjacent road, and that isolated later prehistoric finds had been recorded in the area. Romano-British findspots had been recorded within 20-30m of the site. Saxon and medieval settlement evidence in the area was concentrated along the early routes through, which included two Roman roads, but isolated finds and structures of these dates had also been recorded at other locations. It was concluded that areas of modern disturbance would have affected the survival of any archaeological deposits at the site, although post-medieval deposits may have sealed and protected earlier remains. A more detailed impact assessment of the site was recommended. [AIP] |
