Abstract: |
The only known historic structure on the site was a post-medieval building, dating to c.1770, demolished in the early 19th century, in the south-west of the site, and mid-20th century barn seen in the same area. The eastern end of the development site would have been favourable for settlement of all periods (although no known archaeological sites were recorded here), due to its strategic importance in that it was the first piece of flatish ground overlooking the Cherwell Valley. This part of Headington Hill's strategic importance was known to have been exploited during the Civil War by the Parliamentary forces, although whether the western extent of the fort fell within the eastern part of the development area, or whether it was built further up the slope, was still open to debate.
