Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of two 9m by 2m trial trenches, was undertaken prior to the proposed residential development of the site. Trench 1 clearly showed the activity of Victorian gardening, with two phases of bedding trenches. These features had removed any trace of previous activity, if any had existed. Trench 2 showed little evidence for Victorian disturbance and that there had been little arable cultivation since their deposition. Although no evidence for early features were found, the very high density of medieval pottery sherds, punctuated with very occasional fragments of post-medieval ceramic building materials, suggested their close proximity. Two possible human vertabrae also pointed to human burials in the immediate area. [Au(adp)] |
