Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken in response to a proposal for residential development. The site lay within the shrunken medieval settlement of Shereford and immediately south of discoveries of late Saxon pottery. Trial trench evaluation revealed a ditch/pit containing coal, cinder, fragments of hammerscale, animal bone and pottery dated to the medieval period. Early post-medieval ditches, undated post holes and a poorly metalled surface were also recorded. Environmental analysis showed the ditch/pit and one of the undated post holes contained settlement debris. Low earthworks also survived on the site in the form of slightly raised areas. One such area overlay a poorly metalled surface and was truncated by an early post-medieval ditch, suggesting a medieval date for the earthwork. [Au(abr)] |
