Abstract:
A supplementary report was issued following an earlier desk-based assessment (1992) which had formed part of an environmental assessment. The supplement was required as a result of changes to the boundary of the application area, recent additions to the Derbyshire SMR and the availability of additional cartographic data. Since 1992, a Bronze Age arrowhead had been found within the proposal area. A number of Bronze Age artefacts had previously been recovered in the surrounding area. Within the site boundary, ridge and furrow of a possible medieval date had recently been recorded near Avenue Farm. The revised boundary lay in close proximity to recently-identified earthworks of medieval date, which included house platforms and ridge and furrow. Documentary evidence indicated that early medieval settlement may have occurred in the area. Additional cartographic sources indicated that much of the eastern part of the application area had been retained as common grazing land until at least the late 18th century, suggesting a potential for well-preserved pre-medieval remains. New evidence of post-medieval features was also obtained from an estate map of 1758. Fieldwalking and geophysical survey were recommended for suitable parts of the site. [AIP]
