Abstract:
During the undertaking of fieldwork adhering to a Written Scheme of Works for the Newcastle Great Park it became clear that there was no system for monitoring upgrades or additions to the SMR for Tyne and Wear. In a project of the size and nature of the NGP, and with a construction period of many years, these additions needed to be monitored whilst maintaining the four-point mitigation hierarchy of the WSoW. The purpose of the document was to undertake such a monitoring process for Cells B, C, D, E, F and G. In particular, original aerial photographs were examined in person at the NMR office. This exercise highlighted the existence of a number of sites visible on aerial photographs for which a mitigation strategy would be necessary, summarised in section 4/5 and figure 1. Although the specification for this Supplementary Assessment did not require any recommendations, it as suggested that in addition to the preparation of a supplemental WSoW to cater for the new discoveries, the NGP scheme as a whole required an annual monitoring system. This need be no more than a postal or e-mail check to the NMR on any new material subsequent to the previous check. Such a system would provide an early warning to all parties of any new material. As well as new aerial photographs, the NMR also acquires old archives hitherto unseen, for example libraries of aerial photographs from defunct utility company libraries. These old sources have proved to contain a wealth of detail. [Au(adp)]
