Abstract: |
During the summer and autumn of 1996 a number of archaeological observations and records were made during the construction of a new gauging station on the River Ebble at Nunton, Wiltshire. The construction works had some impact on a well-preserved system of watermeadows. Although the surface configuration of these watermeadows was already well known and had been surveyed, the works provided the opportunity to obtain more detailed information relating to the nature of the banks (panes), channels (drains) and a sluice that constituted part of the system. It was also thought possible, that earlier archaeological remains might exist in the area, principally relating to prehistoric activity. There was no evidence derived for the date of the creation of the system, nor was there any evidence of earlier archaeological deposits or features. [Au] |
