Abstract: |
Two trenches were opened during the evaluation. Natural deposits of brickearth overlying terrace gravels were found in the northernmost trench. The brickearth had largely been eroded in the second trench by a large Palaeo-channel of unknown age, which contained a grey alluvial silt deposit. This was sealed by agricultural soil, bounded by and probably contemporary with, a large 16th/17th century drainage ditch. The northernmost trench contained an area of densely intercutting pits, most of which contained pottery from the 12th-14th century. Both trenches revealed extensive 19th century structures, some of which had been damaged during the war. [Au] |
