Abstract: |
The archaeological impact assessment showed that the site lay in an area of considerable archaeological potential of all periods from the Roman to the post-medieval as was indicated by the presence of the Roman fort, Roman city wall, Saxon ditch, and the medieval and post-medieval city ditch revealed during excavations in the surrounding area. The basement of the present building would have removed most horizontal stratigraphy leaving deep cut features such as the Roman, medieval and post-medieval city ditches. Horizontal stratigraphy may have survived to a depth of up to 1 metres in the area currently used for ground level car parking, with pits and other features surviving to greater depth. The general impact of the scheme was viewed to be low. In particular the impact on the Roman and later defences likely to survive within the existing basement would be low and localised though greater impact was likely upon surviving deposits in the carpark. It was recommended that appropriate measures be taken to record the archaeological deposits at risk from the proposed scheme. [Au(adp)] |
