Abstract: |
During the excavation of a pond, in order to remedy its poor drainage and the parlous condition of the retaining wall on the north side, a number of walls were revealed. Under the advice of English Heritage, archaeological advisors to the Borough of Greenwich, these remains were recorded. The report concluded that these features represented hitherto unknown elements of, or additions to, Sir John Vanbrugh's structure (a house and a number of others for his various family members) of the early 18th century. Of this, only the first house had survived to the present. Amongst the original buildings on the plot the stable block still survives as No.4 Vanbugh Castle. [Au(adp)] |
