Abstract:
<summary>In October 1990 archaeological evaluation work was undertaken to assess the implications of a proposed reduction in ground level around the eastern and northern parts of the existing building at 20 Church Street, Hereford. Three 1 x 1.5m trenches were excavated; the excavations were planned to stop either at the top of significant archaeological deposits or at 0.15m below the internal floor level (56.10m OD), whichever was the higher. Significant archaeological levels were encountered in two of the trenches. The earliest levels consisted of a gravel surface (55.95m OD) and a wall robber trench cutting a buried soil (56.12m OD). From such limited excavations it was not possible to interpret these features or provide a firm date for their deposition. However, the gravel surface could be part of a yard or just the remains of a garden path. The wall robber trench was of greater interest as it suggested the presence of buildings adjacent to the 14th century hall encased within 20 Church Street. A north-south drainage trench dug under archaeological supervision close to the western boundary of the site did not disturb any significant archaeological levels. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM20104
