Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation and recording was necessitated by the planned redevelopment of the refectory at the Cathedral. The work was undertaken in two separate phases. Phase 1 consisted of the reduction of the level of the whole area by c.1m and the additional reduction of the area of the planned lobby by a further c.1m. Phase 2 consisted of the excavation of the area for a lift and two ground beams for the new building. Six main periods were defined using the historical framework of the site and the stratigraphic evidence, in conjunction with the spot dates from the artefactual data: Period 1 - Pre-1000 (pre late Saxon); Period 2 - 1000 - c.1094 (late Saxon and Saxo/Norman town); Period 3 - c.1094 - c. 1538 (Cathedral Refectory); Period 4 - c.1538-c.1620 (The Dissolution); Period 5 - c.1620 - c.1870 (Prebendary's residence); Period 6 - c.1873 - 2001 (modern).
