Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that a Neolithic flint axe had been found 200m to the west, and that traces of Roman occupation had been observed c. 600m away. A settlement, Cherchefelle, which lay c. 1km to the south, had been recorded in the Domesday Book; it was thought to have been located within the area later occupied by Reigate town centre. The proposal site had lain within open farmland prior to its development as a gas works in the 19th century. Records of geotechnical trial pits excavated at the site suggested that construction of the gas works had impacted on the underlying geological deposits, and consequently would have severely damaged any archaeological deposits present. It was concluded that the site had a low archaeological potential, and that no further work woud be necessary. [AIP] |
