Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a link road, which was the documented location of a mid-18th century porcelain factory. Two main phases were encountered during excavation. The first comprised scanty traces of deposits which probably related to the factory, defined by the recovery of kiln furniture and sherds of porcelain, and the possible association of a well. The second main phase was represented by the much more extensive remains of early 19th century terraced houses. The cellars had disturbed and destroyed the 18th century deposits. Continuous occupation of the site from the 18th century onwards had contributed to the presence of very mixed archaeological deposits. Only a small portion of the site was evaluated, owing to safety reasons. The proposal area retained a high potential for the recovery of artefactual remains of the material produced there, and for evidence relating to structural remains of the mill, kilns and main factory buildings which were shown on 18th century maps, together with undocumented ancillary buildings.
