Abstract: |
This report represented an account of the first phase of works associated with a proposed extension to the quarry and covered those areas nominated for the tipping of quarry waste. An irregular ridge running across the site was planned by EDM survey before being half sectioned by machine. This confirmed its suspected natural formation. A total of fourteen irregular pits and depressions were identified within the threatened area and recorded by photography and EDM survey. Five were singled out as representative of the range of the forms, these were cleared of obscuring vegetation and recorded in more detail. One of the five was subsequently selected for partial excavation by half-section. Partial excavation of hollow 0001, together with observations made during surveying, indicated that the pits were the result of stone-getting activity. Evidence from hollow 0001 appeared consistent with the targeting of larger gritstone boulders. No dating evidence was recovered from the hollows, although the suggested character of the quarrying may have been commensurate with a medieval, or more probably, a post-medieval date. [Au(abr)] |
