Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches within the floor of a dock at Dapdune Wharf. The wharf formed part of the Wey Navigation system, which was created in 1652 and extended in 1760. During the watching brief, it was found that the dock had a far more complex history than had previously been thought. Remains of a timber structure which may have been part of a dock used in the repair of barges were uncovered. These were associated with the partial remains of a hearth, possibly used to boil tar. Evidence suggested a date before the normally accepted date of the commencement of barge building and repair at Dapdune, from c. 1900. Survival of the remains was found to be relatively good, in an area previously considered to have been much disturbed. [Au(adp)] |
