Abstract: |
The site was proposed for redevelopment. On the available evidence the site was shown to have a good archaeological potential for the late medieval and post-medieval periods and a low or very low archaeological potential for all other periods of human activity. Past post-depositional impacts on any archaeological remains was defined as variable. Generally severe but localised impacts caused by footings and services could be anticipated. However, the western two thirds of the existing Alliance Building were fully basemented to a depth of c.2m. As a consequence, archaeological remains were unlikely to have survived in this area. Except in the area of the existing basement the proposed development could potentially have a significant archaeological impact through the cutting of new footings and services. This was particularly so on the east of the site where post-medieval and early modern buildings appeared to have been concentrated. On the basis of all available evidence the site would require a programme of archaeological mitigation measures in advance of redevelopment. [Au(adp)] |
