Abstract: |
The assessment identified evidence for human activity throughout the prehistoric period in the vicinity, the highest potential being for Bronze Age, Iron Age/Roman. Medieval and post-medieval occupation evidence was also located close to the site. The proximity of the site to the line of the Roman London to Colchester road suggested potential for roadside settlement and associated features. Although there were only a few SMR entries in the vicinity of the site, the historical evidence of the numerous mills and the archaeological evidence of a revetment meant that the channel-side location of the site had medium potential for Saxon remains. This was supported by an assemblage of Saxon material from the Market Depot. The site seemed to have remained largely undeveloped until the 18th century. [AIP] |
