Abstract: |
The most significant aspect of this exercise was the identification of a substantial surviving fragment of a late medieval gatehouse embedded in the boundary wall of No. 15. Although the Bishop's Palace alone preserved its medieval gatehouse, it was clear that other major domestic buildings in the Cathedral Close once had them. These appear to be remnants of the gatehouse shown as a large square crenellated structure in Hooker's drawing of South Street and the southern side of the Close, drawn c.1560. The same manuscript also depicted gatehouses fronting the street on the properties of the Archdeacon of Exeter and the Precentor. These were clearly a significant component of the geography of Exeter's late medieval Close. [Au(adp)] |
