Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation consisting of three hand excavated trenches was undertaken in advance of a proposed development. Two of the trenches were located within the existing barn structure. One of these revealed a large undated stone foundation c.1m square consisting of large blocks of well dressed oolitic limestone cut into the lias clay. This perhaps represented a large pillar or column associated with an earlier barn structure. The second of these two trenches revealed a stone built drain orientated north-south. The construction of this culvert was associated with a layer dated to the 18th century and recorded immediately above the natural clay. The remaining larger trench was located in the quadrangle area, but produced no visible archaeological deposits. [Au(adp)] |
