Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on groundwork for the construction of blocks of flats with associated parking. Much of the site had been destroyed by a gravel pit shown on the 1868 series Ordnance Survey map. However, undisturbed deposits survived on the edges of the site. A possible burnt mound may have been a prehistoric cooking mound, or even a primitive sauna, but no secure dating evidence was recovered from it. An area of buried soil horizon of uncertain date overlay the possible mound. A linear feature may have been a field ditch or hedge base of probable post-medieval date. (Au(abr)] |
