Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a warehouse identified that the remains of four chronologically developed landscapes could potentially be encountered at the site. The earliest landscape was that of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic; assembages of early flint artefacts had been found within gravel deposits to the north. Ceremonial monuments had been constructed in the area during the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age. These had mainly been identified from cropmark evidence, and included barrows, ring ditches and a cursus. The landscape had become increasingly farmed and settled later in the Bronze Age and through the Iron Age. Bronze Age settlement had been recorded over much of the Heathrow area, and Iron Age settlements at several locations. During the Roman period and later, the landscape had generally become more influenced by the establishment of urban centres, although the rural character of the area had changed litte until development in the 19th century. It was concluded that the site lay in an area of high archaeological potential, and that remains dating from a number of different periods could be anticipated at the site. A field evaluation was recommended. [AIP]
