Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed residential development. The site lay within an area of archaeological potential near the medieval settlement core and close to an undercroft of medieval date and 17th century houses. However, no medieval remains were encountered though a few artefacts of the period were recovered. The site appeared to have been first utilised in the 16th-17th century when metalled surfaces, perhaps yards and tracks, were lain out across the area. Additionally, there were indications of a large hollow at the northern edge of the site. This apparent hollow, which was not seen but surmised from the nature of the deposits may have been a quarry pit and was backfilled in the 16-17th century. There was no evidence of habitation of the site during the post-medieval period and it seemed probable that the area was a yard or garden, perhaps attached to, or associated with, adjacent properties. A quantity of iron slag from a probable 16th -17th century smithy had been dumped in the area. A probable 19th century ditch, perhaps the northern boundary of the site before the present wall was built, was also identified. [Au(abr)]
